What to do with old clothes (that isn’t the bin)

Updated 1 July 2026 · 3 min read

Textiles are one of the hardest things to recycle and one of the easiest to reuse. If a garment is clean and wearable, giving it away is almost always better than throwing it out.

Sort by wearable vs worn-out

Anything clean and in good condition can be given away as-is. Truly worn-out fabric — holes, stains that won’t wash out — is better sent to a textile-recycling drop-off, not passed to another person.

Bundle sensibly

Group by size and type — "boys’ clothes age 5–6, 8 pieces" or "women’s winter wear, M". Bundles move faster than single items and are simpler for one person to collect in a single trip.

Give locally for a same-week handover

Posting clothes on a local give-away platform like Trezow puts them in front of neighbours who can collect within days. Everything is free, so there is no negotiation — just a quick, kind handover.
