How to give away furniture you no longer need

Updated 1 July 2026 · 4 min read

Getting rid of a large piece of furniture usually means paying for disposal or wrestling with resale. Giving it away is faster, free, and keeps a usable item out of landfill. Here is how to do it well.

Take one clear, honest photo

Natural light and a clutter-free background do most of the work. Show the piece from the front and include any wear — a scratch or stain — so the person collecting it knows exactly what they are getting.

Honest photos mean fewer no-shows: people only request what they actually want.

Write a short, specific description

Note the rough dimensions, the material, and whether it comes apart for transport. "Solid wood study table, 120×60cm, flat-packs with an Allen key" tells a requester everything they need to plan a pickup.

List it for free and pick a genuine taker

On Trezow every listing is free by default — there is no price to set and no haggling. Post the item, and interested neighbours send a request. Choose someone who can collect soon, agree a time, and hand it over. A 4-digit code confirms the give-away so both sides know it is done.

Make pickup easy

Large furniture is easier to give away if you are flexible about timing and can help carry it to the door. If it is heavy, say so up front so the person brings help or a vehicle.
